Mini Project | Case Study

Purpose of this project

Can you spot any differences?
As an active user of Spotify, there are many things that I love about it. I always go back to it. But as amazing as it is, it's not perfect for all of my needs and wants as a user.

This project is a part of ongoing series "What If Users Were Designers".
The goal of this project is to focus on details within popular apps that frustrate designers, who are also as users, with the emphasis on using the insight of a UX/UI designer to provide alternative solutions.

As a user, I found the six blocks of recently played music on top of the screen to be distracting. I decided to use it to create space for a different feature that I wish was more prominent on the app.
Based on my experience, it takes a while to find new music from artists that I haven't listened to but are within genres already saved on my profile. Ideally, "Fresh from the studio" would allow easy access to new music that fits my in-app history.

Second change I applied was "Music to your ears". It has the same function as the six blocks of most recently played music from previous example but it does so in a more consistent Spotify format, i.e. horizontal scrolling.

Lastly, I made slight changes in the UI of the bottom navigation bar. The background is set as blurry mirror. The image of the album cover fills more space. I also increased the size of icons. These changes were made to accommodate those with acute visual impairments.
Following brand guidelines

Prior to making any design adjustments, I did my research on Spotify's brand guidelines and followed them throughout the process.
These include:

-
bolder, more refreshing icons (icon weight)
-
using Spotify's signature green only for the logo, the green in the app is darker for wider accessibility
-
extracting artwork color for background
